Rockets stun Celtics to end 5-game skid

BOSTON — Aaron Brooks had 24 points and hit two free throws with 18 seconds left after Boston cut a 12-point deficit to four, and the Rockets held on for a 108-102 victory over the Celtics on Monday night.

The Rockets snapped a five-game skid despite playing without leading scorer Kevin Martin.

Kyle Lowry had 17 points and eight assists, Luis Scola scored 12 with nine rebounds and Jordan Hill had 12 points and eight rebounds for Houston.

Ray Allen scored 19 for Boston, Marquis Daniels had season highs of 19 points and seven rebounds and Rajon Rondo had 12 assists. The Celtics have lost two straight but hope Kevin Garnett will be able to return against Sacramento on Wednesday.

The Celtics (28-9) fell behind the Heat (30-9) for the East's best record.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Stephen Jackson had 27 points and the host Bobcats stayed hot under new coach Paul Silas with a 96-82 win over the Grizzlies in a game played before barely 1,000 fans because of a snowstorm.

MELO SKEPTICAL: Nuggets All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony said he didn't think a trade to the Nets was imminent, and he expressed remorse that teammate Chauncey Billups' name had been dragged into the drama. ESPN.com continued to report that New Jersey was closing in on a deal for Anthony, likely in a three-team trade involving the Pistons.

AROUND THE LEAGUE: Wizards swingman Josh Howard will be out at least another week to 10 days with a sore left knee. … Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley did not practice with an ankle injury and is questionable for tonight's game against the Spurs.
