Ronaldo, Messi, Ribery finalists for soccer player of the year



Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery are finalists for the Ballon d'Or, FIFA's player of the year award. Rules changes that gave voters two extra weeks to choose from 23 candidates made Ronaldo the favorite after he helped Portugal qualify for the World Cup last month. Former Gator Abby Wambach is a finalist for the women's award, along with Marta of Brazil and Nadine Angerer of Germany. The award ceremony is Jan. 13.


MATCH FIXING: English soccer faced renewed concerns about match-fixing after Blackburn striker D.J. Campbell was identified as one of six people arrested in the second police investigation into rigged games opened in two weeks. Campbell was one of two former Premier League players arrested after British newspaper The Sun uncovered alleged spot-fixing, where minor elements of a game are rigged.

FAN VIOLENCE: FIFA condemned the riots in the city of Joinville, where fan fighting halted a decisive Brazilian league match for more than an hour Sunday.

WORLD CUP: FIFA said fans applied for more than 1.1 million tickets for the World Cup in Brazil in the first 24 hours after the latest sales phase opened.

PRESIDENT QUITS: Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido quit the Spanish league club after being sentenced to seven years in prison for embezzlement and corruption.

MANDELA TRIBUTE: After allowing a cup final to go ahead over the weekend as a tribute, South Africa said it is postponing all games until after Nelson Mandela's funeral.

NEW COACH: Rolland Courbis returned to Montpellier of the French league as coach to revive the fortunes of a club he helped gain promotion four years ago.


Movie star makes move into electric car racing

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio announced that he's partnering with Venturi Automobiles and will enter a team in the FIA Formula E Championship, the first series exclusively for electric cars. The open-wheel series is set to launch next year.

FORMULA ONE: The series will award double points for the last race of the season starting next year, and drivers will be given permanent numbers.


COURTS: Skier Bode Miller and ex-girlfriend Sara McKenna agreed to share time with their infant son for the next four months, temporarily ending a custody dispute.

GOLF: Boo Weekley withdrew from this weekend's Franklin Templeton Shootout in Naples because of the deaths of his grandfather and uncle.
