Rowdies coach Stuart Campbell steps down

ST. PETERSBURG — Tampa Bay Rowdies chairman/CEO Bill Edwards and coach Stuart Campbell announced Thursday that Campbell will step down immediately.

"It has been wonderful working with Stuart these last few years, and we will miss him," Edwards said in a statement. "He has been a great example for our players and coaching staff. We part ways with the utmost respect for one another and I look forward to seeing him at future matches."

Both said the decision was mutual.

"First and foremost I'd like to thank Bill for the opportunities he has given me and the loyalty he has shown toward me," said Campbell, who was promoted to head coach in August 2015 after Thomas Rongen was fired. "This opportunity has been life changing for my family and I, and for that we will be forever grateful to the Rowdies."

Campbell finished 26-22-27 at Tampa Bay.

The Rowdies said in a release that the team will have no further comment on the move.

The Rowdies, who are 4-5-0 this season after three straight losses on the road, are back home on Saturday night at 7:30 against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

Tampa Bay is seventh in the Eastern Conference standings and was eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup Wednesday after a 1-0 loss in the second round at host Jacksonville of the National Premier Soccer League.
