Schumacher ties Top Fuel mark

GAINESVILLE — Six-time defending series champion Tony Schumacher won the NHRA Top Fuel class Sunday at Gatornationals.

Schumacher beat teammate Antron Brown in the final. It was Brown's first event since his crash at Phoenix three weeks ago, when a tire spun off, bounced into the grandstands and killed a Wisconsin woman.

It was Schumacher's fourth win at Gatornationals, tying the Top Fuel record set by Larry Dixon and Joe Amato.

Tim Wilkerson, who hadn't won a heat this season, beat defending race winner Bob Tasca III in the Funny Car final. Jason Line won the Pro Stock class, and Eddie Krawiec claimed Pro Stock Motorcycle.

"We did have a good day," Wilkerson told NHRA.com. "I'm not going to say we were world-beaters, but we made some pretty darn good runs to keep them on their toes."

In Funny Car, Matt Hagan set the national speed record at the 1,000-foot distance at 316.15 mph in the first round, but lost to Wilkerson in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, NASCAR Sprint Cup star Kurt Busch lost his drag-racing debut in the opening round of the Super Gas division in a 1970 Dodge Challenger he bought on eBay.

FORMULA ONE: Ferrari's decision to give up on last season and begin working on this year's car paid off in the opener when its new driver, Fernando Alonso, led the Italian team's 1-2 finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Sakhir. The two-time world champion passed teammate Felipe Massa at Turn 2 after the start. Alonso then passed pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull on Lap 34 and led the rest of the way. Vettel, affected by an exhaust problem, faded to fourth behind McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.
