MISANO ADRIATICO, Italy — Motorcycle racing endured its second tragedy in eight days Sunday.
Shoya Tomizawa, 19, became the second teenage rider to die in the sport in recent days. He fell and was hit by two trailing riders during the Moto2 race at the San Marino Grand Prix.
Tomizawa's crash was similar to the one that killed Peter Lenz, 13, on Aug. 29 in a U.S. Grand Prix Racers Union series event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Tomizawa of Japan lost control of his bike and hit his head on the track as his bike flipped over. While on the track, he was hit at full speed by riders Alex De Angelis and Scott Redding.
A statement on the MotoGP website said Tomizawa died of cranial, thoracic and abdominal trauma.
"I'm truly devastated about what happened to Shoya," De Angelis said. "I'm close to his family, and all of them loved him a lot. … It is the worst ever incident in my career. I tried everything I could to avoid him and hit his motorbike instead."
Toni Elias won the division, formerly known as 250cc, from the pole. Dani Pedrosa won the main event, the MotoGP.
NHRA: Track records fell in all four major classes and Matt Hines set a national record in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a run of 6.185 seconds at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Hines also set a track record at 196.76 mph on a Harley-Davidson. Larry Dixon (3.776 seconds, 324.36 mph) in Top Fuel, Matt Hagan (4.039, 301.07) in Funny Car and Mike Edwards (6.579, 209.26) in Pro Stock all set track records for elapsed time.
