RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond scored on the game's final play and the Rowdies had to settle for a 1-1 tie on Saturday.
Marcel Schafer gave Tampa Bay (6-3-6) a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute when his free kick was deflected in.
In the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time, Richmond's Frank Tayou scored on a volley from outside the 18-yard box.
"It's a tough result," Rowdies coach Stuart Campbell said. "We controlled most of the match, and to get scored on in the final play of the match is hard."
Shafer's free kick from just outside the 18-yard box hit the wall and trickled past Richmond goalkeeper Matt Turner, who was diving the other way.
"It's always nice to score, but I would change a goal for three points any day," Schafer said.
Tayou, who signed with the Kickers on Friday, entered the game in the 66th minute. On the final play, he got a ball from defender Mallan Roberts and fired into the top corner of the net.
The Rowdies visit Pittsburgh on Thursday.
"We're going to look at this game and work on several things," Campbell said. "We need to learn from games like these and make sure it doesn't happen again."
