5A region soccer: Gaither 2, Venice 1

The Gaither girls soccer team won its first region tournament game since 2005 with a 2-1 upset road win at Venice in Thursday's Class 5A region quarterfinals.

The Cowboys scored a pair of first-half goals and held on late to end the season of the three-time district champion Indians.

Gaither (11-5-4) took an early lead when midfielder Lauren Moore scored off a left corner kick from Kaycee McGuire in the game's fifth minute.

The Cowboys scored again in the 31st minute as Jessica Lawless cleaned up a shot by McGuire.

Venice (11-6-4) answered early after the half when Dana Laroque sent a hard shot into the right goal post, and despite outshooting the Cowboys 17-13, the Indians couldn't get an equalizer.

Lucas Duda connects for a two-run home run in the sixth, getting the Rays within 7-5. A Logan Morrison home run in the ninth made it 7-6, but Tampa Bay couldn’t complete the comeback.

SS Adeiny Hechavarria doesn't always look like he's going hard, but he showed impressive reactions Saturday in reversing field to catch a ball that clanked off the catwalk then firing to second to double up Guillermo Heredia on an attempt to tag up.
