ST. PETERSBURG — St. Petersburg Catholic goalkeeper Maggie Dalessio did not have a shutout, a clean sheet in soccer jargon. She did not stop Seminole's lone goal.

But she did not make many mistakes, either.

The Warhawks kept finding open spaces in front of her. But Dalessio kept thwarting them, including two pivotal saves in the second half to help preserve a 2-1 victory.

Barons coach Gary Kolb could not ask for more from Dalessio, a sophomore who had to be convinced to become SPC's last line of defense.

"Maggie really wanted to play in the field, but the girls kept telling me she was pretty good in goal," Kolb said. "We were in need of a keeper, and she's been great back there."

SPC (9-2-2) started the scoring on a goal by Rebecca Borland 43 seconds into the game.

"We were caught half asleep on that one," Seminole coach Steve Klupicki said.

The Warhawks (10-2-2) answered with a goal by Katia Lelii to force a 1-1 halftime tie.

In the second half, Seminole dictated the pace, pushing the ball past midfield and in position to score. But shots kept falling into the hands of Dalessio, who made two great diving stops.

"(SPC's) keeper was nothing short of phenomenal," Klupicki said.

The Barons got the winning goal in the final eight minutes on a shot from Kelsey Dougherty Howard. Casey McKeon had both assists for SPC.

This is the second time the Barons have beaten the Warhawks, the first coming during the preseason.

"This was a big win for us against a very good Seminole team," Kolb said. "I thought we were fast and showed a lot of speed in the backfield."
