Tampa Bay Rowdies lose to Austin Aztex 4-2

AUSTIN, Texas — The Rowdies had one two-goal comeback in them but not two, falling to league-leading Austin 4-2 Saturday in a U.S. Soccer Federation Division 2 game.

But the Rowdies (6-8-6) were able to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot. Montreal's 2-0 loss to Carolina left it tied with Tampa Bay in points at 24 and in seventh place in the league. The top eight in the 12-team league make the playoffs.

Also, Puerto Rico tied Miami 1-1 and drew even with Tampa Bay and Montreal in points. Montreal and Puerto Rico have played one more game than the Rowdies.

Austin (12-2-5, 41 points) got two goals two minutes apart in the first 18 minutes to take a 2-0 lead. But in the 21st minute, the Rowdies' Ricardo Sanchez converted a penalty kick to make it 2-1, and four minutes later, Long Tan tied it.

But Austin bounced back with a goal on a corner kick in the 35th minute and another in stoppage time for a 4-2 halftime lead.

Tampa Bay played with 10 men after Tan was sent off in the 36th minute.
