Class 2A

Mustangs get season sweep of Chargers

ST. PETERSBURG — Northside Christian and Shorecrest have played three times this season with the Mustangs winning all three meetings.

Friday they played again in the Class 2A region semis, and the result was familiar as NCS won 5-4 to advance to the its first region final.

"This season has been a dream," Mustangs coach John Anderson said.

Northside's Jessica Anderson and Shorecrest's Raquel Galinski were locked in a scoreless battle until the Mustangs broke through with two outs in the third inning. Anderson and Tiffany Boyer walked. Lauren Tozour and sister Lindsey followed with back-to-back RBI singles to put NCS up 2-0.

The Chargers responded with three runs in the top of the fourth. Hannah Smith and Molly Webber both singled. Haley Jayson dropped down a bunt, and the throw to first sailed into rightfield scoring Smith and Webber. A hit batter and two walks forced the third run in.

Shorecrest scored another run before the Mustangs mounted the winning rally in the sixth. Stephanie Bonalewicz, Kayla Turner and Anderson all drew walks. Boyer drove a single into leftfield to score two runs. After another walk Lauren Tozour's fielder's choice drove in the deciding run.

"We have won every different way this season," John Anderson said. "We have two-and-a-half-hour practices and we're starting to see dividends."
