TAMPA — Tampa Catholic pulled out a marathon win in Thursday's 3A-10 final, beating St. Petersburg Catholic 6-5 in 11 innings.
Amber Hay drove in the winning run with a bunt after Kathy Spack reached on a throwing error, then advanced on a wild pitch.
Both pitchers were strong, with Tampa Catholic's Tory Bohanan and SPC's Chloe Saganowich each striking out 14.
Home runs were also plentiful.
SPC's Madison Saganowich blasted a two-run homer in the third inning. Then sister Chloe, hit a mammoth shot to put the Barons up 3-1. After Tarah Revels hit a two-run homer to put TC up 5-3 in the sixth, Kelsey Humphrey answered for the Barons with a two-run homer to tie.
"Most teams would have folded after back-to-back home runs," TC coach Vernon Tatum said. "We remained focused and continued to work hard and that led us to the district championship."
