4A softball: Lakewood Ranch dispatches Jefferson

Class 4A

Dragons run out of firepower late

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Corey Hanewich pounded a first-pitch home run to start the game. Sarah Burnett's RBI single off another first pitch added a precious insurance run later. That type of aggression was key Tuesday night in Lakewood Ranch's 4-2 victory over Jefferson in a Class 4A region quarterfinal.

Hanewich reached base in all three plate appearances, highlighted by her leadoff home run to rightfield in the first. It was the lone earned run off Dragons right-hander Nadina Sola, who scattered six hits in six innings.

Trailing 2-0, Jefferson tied it up in the fourth when Doris Rodriguez bounced a grounder back to Huntyre Elling, who didn't see Florida State-bound Raina Balooha heading home from third base and opted for the out at first. The Mustangs (24-3) pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
