Friday Night Rewind It doesn't matter which team you cheer for. We've got video previews of every high school football program in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando County.
TRINITY — Looking back at both regular-season meetings between Countryside and Gaither, the teams knew runs would be hard to come by.
The result was the same in Friday's 6A-7 district final as Countryside won 1-0 at Mitchell High.
"One run is never enough when the two of us play," Countryside coach Kaylyn Bayly said.
"This (district championship) means a lot to us, especially the hard work put in by our team and six seniors; it really means a lot to them."
In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Ashlee Sismilich hit the winning single past a diving Justin McCoy to rightfield, scoring Devika Choo Chew from third base. Choo Chew came in as a courtesy runner for sophomore Dineen Vaughan, who singled with two outs for the Cougars (19-2).
The Cowboys tried to rally in the top of the seventh, as sophomore Kristen McGrath doubled to left-center with no outs.
A batter later, after a wild pitch by freshman Alyssa Bache that moved McGrath to third, Ashlee McCoy attempted the bunt squeeze play but McGrath was thrown out at home to end the threat.
Bache pitched a gem, striking out 10, allowing only three hits and no runs.
"We knew it was going to be a close game because they beat us earlier in the year," Bache said.
