jeter, Rivera Among those not receiving Arbitration

NEW YORK — Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Manny Ramirez and Hideki Matsui failed to receive salary arbitration offers as one of the first offseason deadlines passed.

Texas pitcher Cliff Lee and Philadelphia outfielder Jayson Werth were among 33 players who did receive arbitration offers Tuesday. If they sign with new teams, their old clubs receive extra picks in June's draft as compensation.

New York reportedly made a $45 million, three-year offer to Jeter, but his agent was not pleased. The Yanks told the shortstop to test the market.

"As much as we want to keep everybody, we've already made these guys very, very rich, and I don't feel we owe anybody anything monetarily," Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner said.

Top DH: Vladimir Guerrero won the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award after helping the Rangers earn their first trip to the World Series. Guerrero beat out Boston's David Oritz and Minnesota's Jim Thome.

Obituary: Danny McDevitt, the former Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher who won the team's final game at Ebbets Field in 1957, died of unknown causes near Covington, Ga. He was 78.

Eyes, lights play havoc at World Tour

Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-2 at the ATP World Tour Finals in London, his Serbian foe bothered by his contact lenses.

There were also visual issues in the earlier match. Andy Roddick was angered by flashing lights behind the baseline during his racket-busting 7-5, 6-3 loss to Tomas Berdych that left him with an 0-2 record at this season-ending tournament.

Djokovic called time out in the eighth game. After Nadal made it 4-4, Djokovic left the court to tend to the problem, but it seemed to persist when he returned.

Roddick's outburst over the neon advertising lights came in the second set. After he was broken for the second time, Roddick hit a ball into the stands and smashed his racket.

"They were still advertising fun stuff," Roddick said.

Autos: The struggles of Dale Earnhardt Jr. were not the sole reason for the sweeping changes made at Hendrick Motorsports, the team owner said a day after shuffling the driver and crew chief lineups for three of his teams. Rick Hendrick said the entire organization had grown complacent. "This was not a Dale Earnhardt — not a move that we made, this major of a move, because of Dale or his situation," Hendrick said of the driver who, along with Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin, went winless this season. Jimmie Johnson, however, will remain paired with crew chief Chad Knaus after winning their fifth title in a row.

Soccer: Former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira says the Chilean federation has contacted him about becoming the country's national coach. Marcelo Bielsa resigned this month.
