Venus to miss second Tuneup for U.S. Open

MONTREAL — Venus Williams withdrew from next week's WTA tournament in Montreal on Friday, citing an injured left knee that is hampering her preparation for the U.S. Open.

The No. 4-ranked Williams already had pulled out of this week's event in Cincinnati, another tuneup for the year's last Grand Slam, which begins Aug. 30.

Rogers Cup: Roger Federer advanced to the semifinals in Toronto with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) win over Tomas Berdych. Federer plays today against the winner of the Novak Djokovic-Jeremy Chardy match. Defending champ Andy Murray ended David Nalban­dian's 11-match win streak with a 6-2, 6-2 victory and plays Rafael Nadal, a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 winner over Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Cincinnati Open: Fourth-seeded Kim Clijsters beat Flavia Pennetta 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to advance to a semifinal against Ana Ivanovic.

Olympics: Wimbledon organizers said the traditional all-white dress rule will be waived for the London Games in 2012.

Ex-coach Sutton gets probation

Former Oklahoma State coach Sean Sutton was sentenced in Stillwater, Okla., to three years' probation after pleading guilty to illegally obtaining prescription drugs. Sutton, 41, agreed to testify against two people who allegedly supplied him with adderall, clonazepam and oxycodone as part of a plea agreement covering four felony counts.

Georgia: The school lost recruit Cady Lalanne of Orlando's Oak Ridge High (Scout.com's 21st-ranked center in the nation) because the NCAA eligibility committee ruled he did not meet initial eligibility requirements.

UCONN: The NCAA granted the school more time to respond to allegations the men's program committed eight major rules violations, including improper calls and texts to recruits.

Olympics: Chris Paul, who is recovering from knee surgery but went to watch the U.S. team scrimmage in New York, said he will join Carmelo Anthony in defending their gold medals in London in 2012.

Gymnastics: Jonathan Horton finished strong on rings and vault to win the U.S. championship in Hartford, Conn., holding off Danell Leyva to earn his second straight national title. Horton finished with 181.65 to beat Leyva by 2.3 points. Today, Rebecca Bross takes a 2.2-point lead over Mattie Larson into the finals and tries to close out the women's title.

Golf: Danielle Kang defeated Sydnee Michaels on the first playoff hole to reach the semifinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur in Charlotte, N.C. Kang faces Jennifer Kirby, while Stephanie Sherlock plays Jessica Korda.

Track: American Tyson Gay ran the fastest 100 meters in the world this year (9.78 seconds) to win at the London's Diamond League meet. The field did not include Usain Bolt or Asafa Powell, who both ran 9.82 this year.

Volleyball: The Association of Volleyball Professionals is canceling the rest of this year's beach tour because of financial troubles.
