Champions win in europa league

Three-time winner Liverpool beat Young Boys 5-3 in a Europa League opener in Switzerland on Thursday, and defending champion Atletico Madrid cruised to a 3-0 win at Hapoel Tel-Aviv. U.S. star Clint Dempsey had a goal disallowed because of an offside call in his first start for Tottenham, a 0-0 tie against Lazio. Hugo Lloris made his Tottenham debut in goal in place of American Brad Friedel.

jurisprudence: Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho wants $19,600 in damages from Spanish newspaper Marca for being described in an article as "the type of person who would flee after knocking someone down," Marca said. The team said it is studying a legal case against a former Barcelona vice president who tweeted Mourinho is a "psychopath."

Horses

Speedy win in Race 2 of pacing Triple Crown

Michael's Power won the Little Brown Jug, beating Sweet Lou by 1¾ lengths in the second leg of the Triple Crown for 3-year-old pacers at Delaware, Ohio.

Driven by the Scott Zeron and trained by Casie Coleman, Michael's Power had the fastest opening quarter in event history, 25.2 seconds, and finished the mile in 1 minute, 50.0 seconds.

Dynamic Youth won the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Cane Pace, but wasn't eligible for the Little Brown Jug, and his owners decided not to enter the race as a supplemental entry.

The third leg of the Triple Crown is the Messenger Stakes, Nov. 10 at Yonkers Raceway.

Grand national: Mounting concerns over safety in the world's most grueling race have forced English organizers to make modifications to the course following a review after two horses died this year. Changes will be made to fence design, landing areas and course irrigation. The changes will start for the 2013 race. Ten horses having died in the past 12 years of the National, sparking criticism from animal welfare groups.

Equestrian: Bruce Springsteen's daughter Jessica has bought a gold medal-winning horse from the London Olympics with hopes of competing for the United States in show jumping at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Peter Charles rode Murka's Vindicat W in a jumpoff to clinch the Olympic team title for Britain last month. He said on Facebook the 10-year-old gelding has been sold to the 20-year-old Springsteen.

Tennis: Former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki cruised into the quarterfinals of the Korea Open, beating Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-3 in Seoul. Wozniacki faces Klara Zakopalova, who defeated Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1, 7-6 (8-6). … Seventh seed Gael Monfils continued his successful return after several months out with a knee injury, reaching the Moselle Open quarterfinals with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory over Nicolas Mahut in Metz, France. American Jesse Levine faces a quarterfinal against top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after beating Michael Berrer 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.

WNBA: Temeka Johnson scored a career-high 26 to lead host Tulsa to a 78-66 victory over New York, which clinched the Eastern Conference's fourth and final playoff berth minutes after the game when Chicago lost to visiting Atlanta 75-66. Chicago has never made the playoffs in its seven seasons.
