DJOKOVIC WINS NINTH THIS SEASON

SHANGHAI — Novak Djokovic beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 6-4 to capture the ninth title of his season at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, a week after he triumphed at the China Open for the sixth time in six appearances. He didn't drop a set at either tournament, only once being pushed to a tiebreaker, and has won 17 straight matches dating to his U.S. Open championship run.

HONG KONG OPEN: Jelena Jankovic rallied to beat Angelique Kerber 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 for her 15th WTA title.

German ex-star denies bribery

Soccer great Franz Beckenbauer said he never paid anyone to secure votes for Germany's 2006 World Cup bid despite allegations that bribes were involved. Beckenbauer, who headed the bidding committee, said in a statement he was "certain" no other committee member engaged in bribery.

MLS: Mike Grella scored in 7 seconds for the fastest goal in league history as host New York Red beat Philadelphia 4-1 for the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. … Chris Pontius scored in the 39th minute and host D.C. United added three second-half goals to beat Chicago 4-0. … Obafemi Martins scored in the 82nd minute and Seattle ousted host Houston from playoff contention with a 1-1 draw.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Georginio Wijnaldum scored four goals as host Newcastle recorded its first win of the season, crushing Norwich 6-2.

GERMAN: Leon Andreasen scored with his arm to give Hannover a controversial 1-0 win at Cologne in the Bundesliga.

SPAIN: Celta Vigo forward Manuel "Nolito" Agudo scored in the 90th minute for a 2-1 win at 10-man Villarreal and pull the visitors level with Real Madrid and Barcelona atop the league.

BOXING: Prichard Colon was in critical condition after suffering a brain bleed during a bout in Fairfax, Va.

WNBA: Former All-Star Glory Johnson gave birth to twin girls, she announced on social media. Johnson married fellow WNBA player Brittney Griner in May, and the Phoenix Mercury center filed for an annulment after Johnson announced she was pregnant. The annulment was denied, so they are still married according to public court documents, though they are going through private mediation to resolve their 28-day marriage.

PREPS: An East Texas football player died Saturday, a day after collapsing on the sideline. Alto High School junior Cam'ron Matthews, 16, suffered a seizure during a home game against Price-Carlisle.

RUGBY: Bernard Foley landed a last-minute penalty goal that gave Australia a 35-34 win over Scotland in a World Cup quarterfinal match in London.
