Sports news in brief: Andy Roddick wins, Wayne Rooney hurt



KEY BISCAYNE — Andy Roddick, seeded sixth, reached the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open on Tuesday, beating Benjamin Becker 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Roddick next plays No. 33 seed Nicolas Almagro. Roddick also will play a doubles event to benefit Chilean earthquake victims on Saturday — the day before the final. "Even if things go great and I'm in the final, I'll still play Saturday, just because it's necessary and what needs to happen," he said. "It's a bigger cause than my tournament." In the fourth round, Tampa resident Mardy Fish retired with a sciatic nerve injury while trailing Mikhail Youzhny 6-1, 1-0.

In the women's draw, No. 13 seed Marion Bartoli beat No. 12 Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 7-5 and next faces Venus Williams.


Man U, England star Rooney leaves with limp

English star Wayne Rooney limped off near the final whistle in Manchester United's 2-1 loss at Bayern Munich in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. Rooney is to be evaluated today, with manager Alex Ferguson saying, "He got a kick in the ankle. … I don't think it's terribly serious." Man U hosts the second leg next week. England faces the United States on June 12 in the group stage of the World Cup in South Africa. Also in the Champions League, host Lyon beat fellow French club Bordeaux 3-1.

MLS: This year, the title game will be held in Toronto for the first time. The MLS Cup is Nov. 21 at BMO Field, where the field was switched to grass this season and the capacity is rising to 21,800.


TRACK: Caster Semenya said in a statement that she'll race again — but whether any meets let her do so while they wait for the IAAF to release results of her gender tests is in question. Semenya, 19, was denied entry to a meet in her native South Africa.

COLLEGES: The NCAA said it found major infractions involving all 14 sports at Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis. The school will get three years' probation, lose scholarships, and vacate a total of 72 wins in three sports.… U.S. District Judge William Osteen is tossing a lawsuit filed after Andrew Giuliani, the son of former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, was dismissed from Duke's golf team. … In baseball, Florida State beat Florida 7-2 in front of 9,276 in Jacksonville.

BOXING: WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero has entered a rehab center for treatment of drug and alcohol addiction, said one of his lawyers, Milda Mora. Valero, 28, is under court orders after his arrest on charges of harassing his wife and resisting arrest.
