Amare Stoudemire, going to the basket over the Pacers’ Paul George, center, and Danny Granger in the second half, scores six of the Knicks’ last seven points and finishes with 26 in the game to help New York snap a two-game skid.

NEW YORK — With the Knicks needing to stop a slide, Amare Stoudemire took matters into his own hands.

He had 26 points, including six of New York's last seven, and the Knicks beat the Pacers 98-92 Sunday.

"This was definitely huge," Stoudemire said. "This was a big game for us. Indiana is right behind us as far as the playoff race, so it was important for us to get this win. We understand how big this game was for us and in the fourth quarter, we played with a sense of urgency and we were able to get the win."

Danny Granger had 25 points and 17 rebounds, and Darren Collison had 22 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Pacers, who lost for the fourth time in their past five games.

The Knicks lost games in Florida last week to the Heat and the Magic and have the NBA-best Spurs coming to town Tuesday.

"It was one of those nights where we had to grind it out," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I though we did a good job when it was time to win the game."

The Knicks trailed 87-84 early in the fourth quarter, but former Florida State standout Toney Douglas and Wilson Chandler made 3-pointers to give New York a 90-87 lead.

Indiana's James Posey answered with a 3, but Raymond Felton made a free throw to give New York a 91-90 lead.

Stoudemire hit two layups and a jumper that made it 97-92. Felton added a free throw with 18.9 seconds left.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Paul Pierce had 30 points, Ray Allen had 23 and the visiting Celtics beat the Raptors 93-79, their 10th win in 11 meetings with Toronto. … Shawn Marion had 22 points and DeShawn Stevenson 21, and the visiting Mavericks snapped a three-game skid with a 104-95 win over the Cavs. … Joe Johnson scored 11 of his 29 in the fourth quarter, Josh Smith added 22 and the visiting Hawks rallied to beat the Clippers 107-98.

AROUND THE LEAGUE: Mavericks small forward Caron Butler could be out at least a couple of months because of a knee injury. The initial diagnosis is a torn patellar tendon, according to the Associated Press. Butler already was being looked at to pick up some offensive slack because of an injury to leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki. … Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo returned to the starting lineup against the Raptors after missing seven games with a sprained left ankle. … Timberwolves forward Anthony Tolliver, out since Dec. 3 with a sprained ligament in his right knee, practiced but did not travel.
