BOSTON — Yankees RHP Ivan Nova decided Thursday to have season-ending Tommy John surgery for a partially torn elbow ligament. The operation is scheduled for Tuesday with Dr. James Andrews.
Nova left Saturday's 16-1 loss at Tampa Bay in the fifth inning. An MRI then revealed the injury and he was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He was transferred Thursday to the 60-day disabled list.
The Yankees promoted RHPs Bruce Billings and Shane Greene from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned INF Dean Anna and RHP Preston Claiborne to the Triple-A team.
Also, Yankees manager Joe Girardi says he doesn't expect to be fined for pushing a television camera Wednesday to keep it from aiming into the tunnel between the team's dugout and clubhouse after pitcher Michael Pineda was ejected in the second inning for having pine tar on his neck. Girardi says cameras are not permitted to show scenes in the tunnel.
