CHARLOTTE, N.C. — ACC commissioner John Swofford said Wednesday there were no red flags indicating that academic fraud was being missed or ignored at North Carolina while he was athletic director.

Swofford made the comments at basketball media day, a week after an outside investigation detailed wide-ranging fraud in an academic department popular with athletes. Swofford was UNC's AD from 1980-97.

"It never came up while I was there as an issue from any source," Swofford said. "If it had, obviously, we would have addressed that with the appropriate people."

Also, Duke was picked by coaches as the preseason favorite and North Carolina junior guard Marcus Paige as player of the year. Florida State was picked eighth and Miami 10th.

American Athletic: Defending national champion Connecticut was picked as the preseason favorite, and its senior point guard, Ryan Boatright, as player of the year. USF was picked eighth and UCF ninth.

HAWAII: The school, under investigation by the NCAA, fired coach Gib Arnold and assistant Brandyn Akana.

TCU: Leading receiver Josh Doctson, who rolled an ankle in last weekend's game, has shown "drastic improvement" and could be available Saturday for the 10th-ranked Horned Frogs against No. 20 West Virginia, coach Gary Patterson said.

UTAH: Big-play receiver Dres Anderson is out for the season with a knee injury, a blow for an offense that has sputtered.
