Wichita State rallies to stop Alabama upset

WICHITA, Kan. — Darius Carter had 16 points and the go-ahead slam with 11.9 seconds remaining to lead No. 11 Wichita State to a 53-52 victory over Alabama on Tuesday.

The Shockers (8-1) trailed by 11 with five minutes to play but rallied behind Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet, who finished with 14 and nine points.

Levi Randolph and Shannon Hale each scored 13 for Alabama, which managed just one point in the game's final 5:50.

Alabama led by one at halftime. Consecutive baskets by Hale were followed by a Randolph 3-pointer with 13:41 left, giving the Tide a 36-28 lead.

Wichita State tried to rally. Randolph answered a VanVleet 3-pointer with a patient take to the basket for a three-point play and 39-31 lead.

NO. 3 ARIZONA 101, OAKLAND 64: Freshman Stanley Johnson matched his season high with 18 points to lead five players in double figures as the Wildcats (11-0) wrapped up their nonconference home schedule.

NO. 9 TEXAS 106, LIPSCOMB 61: Freshman Myles Turner scored a season-high 26 and added nine rebounds and six blocks to lead the host Longhorns (9-1).

NO. 15 OKLA. 85, ORAL ROBERTS 53: Buddy Hield scored 16 and TaShawn Thomas, a senior transfer from the University of Houston, followed his 25-point outing against Tulsa by scoring 14 as the host Sooners (7-2) won their third straight game.

NO. 24 UNC 79, UNC GREENSBORO 56: Kennedy Meeks scored 18 to help the visiting Tar Heels (7-3) regroup from a weekend loss at top-ranked Kentucky. They shot 49 percent and had a 20-point lead midway through the first half, cruising in the same arena where they'll play in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament in March.

NO. 13 IOWA ST.: Redshirt sophomore Sherron Dorsey-Walker, a seldom-used reserve guard, said he's leaving the program and hopes to transfer.

CREIGHTON: Guard James Milliken was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. Coach Greg McDermott announced that Milliken would not practice or travel with the Bluejays during the suspension.

Women

FSU 79, N. FLORIDA 58: Adut Bulgak had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the host Seminoles (10-1), who opened the game with a 7-0 run and never trailed en route to their sixth straight win.

NO. 16 OREGON ST. 70, NO. 6 UNC 55: Ruth Hamblin had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the visiting Beavers, who improved to 8-0 for the first time in program history and beat a top-10 team for the first time since 1995. Allisha Gray led the Tar Heels (9-1) with 20 points.

NO. 11 TENN. 54, WICHITA ST. 51: Cierra Burdick had 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds as the host Vols (8-2) held on for their fourth straight victory.

NO. 18 MICH. ST. 77, ALCORN ST. 41: Aerial Powers had 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the host Spartans (7-2), who shot 48 percent from the field.

NO. 19 SYRACUSE 70, CANISIUS 37: Alexis Peterson scored 18 for the host Orange (8-1), which outrebounded its neighbors two hours to the west by 67-31.
