Magic weathers Wall's 52 to whip Wizards

WASHINGTON — Elfrid Payton scored 22 of his season-high 25 in the first half, and the Magic overcame John Wall's 52-point performance to beat the Wizards 124-116 on Tuesday night.

Wall had a career high for points and kept Washington in it with 33 in the second half as the Wizards got within single digits in the fourth quarter. The guard made 18 of 31 shots from the field and added eight assists.

Payton went 8-of-8 from the field and 3-of-3 from the line off the bench in that first half, nearly matching his season best of 23 points in the half alone. Payton finished 9-of-12 and handed out nine assists.

Orlando won its third straight.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Carmelo Anthony matched a season high with 35 points, and the visiting Knicks beat the injury-ravaged Heat 114-103 for their fourth straight victory. … Kawhi Leonard scored 31 and the Spurs improved to 13-0 on the road this season with a 105-91 victory over the Timberwolves. … Tobias Harris scored 22 and the host Pistons beat the Bulls 102-91 for their fourth win in five games. … Marc Gasol had 26 points and 12 rebounds, and the host Grizzlies finally put away the short-handed 76ers 96-91.

AROUND THE LEAGUE: Former NBA All-Star Jayson Williams called himself a "coward" for his cover-up of the drunken accidental shooting death of a limo driver in 2002. Williams shot driver Gus Christofi when handling a shotgun in his home. He served time in prison and discussed the shooting on 60 Minutes Sports on Showtime. … Cavaliers starting shooting guard J.R. Smith will miss at least one game — and probably more — with a hyperextended left knee. … Mavericks center Andrew Bogut is expected to miss at least the next three games with a hyperextended knee.
