DETROIT — Max Scherzer struck out 14 in eight shutout innings, throwing a season-high 121 pitches. He had eight strikeouts in the first three innings. Since June 22, Scherzer is 6-1 in 10 starts with a 1.78 ERA and 85 strikeouts while giving up 52 hits. "He pitched like a Cy Young winner," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. J.D. Martinez homered to help give the Tigers a sweep of the two-game series and a split of four games in the home-and-home series that started Monday in Pittsburgh.
