Tigers lose Guillen's bat after leg injury

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Tigers placed OF Carlos Guillen on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and called up OF Brennan Boesch from Triple-A Toledo before Friday's game against the Rangers.

Guillen, a three-time All-Star who is batting .311 with a homer and eight RBIs, was injured while running the bases in Thursday night's 5-4 victory over the Angels.

Boesch was the DH in the No. 5 slot against Texas in his major-league debut.

Boesch was batting .379 with three homers and 17 RBIs in 15 games for Toledo.

The Tigers were ahead 5-3 on Thursday when Guillen attempted to score from second on a fifth-inning single. Guillen pulled up halfway between third and home and was tagged out.

"No fun," said Guillen as he limped through the clubhouse.

"He was starting to swing the bat well, so it's a crying shame," manager Jim Leyland said.

Ramirez goes to DL: Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez was put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf. He Ramirez was injured running out a single Thursday.

It's the same problem that caused Ramirez, 37, to miss two starts last weekend. The 12-time All-Star is hitting .415 with two homers and 12 RBIs.

"We just have to get this thing fixed," manager Joe Torre said. "… The rationale is, if he's better in a week or 10 days, we might as well do this."

To replace Ramirez on the roster, the Dodgers recalled OF Xavier Paul from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Rained out: The Marlins game at Colorado was postponed by rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader today. The first game is set to start at 3:10 p.m. The second game will begin about 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first.

Blue Jays: 2B Aaron Hill (tightness in right hamstring) was activated from the 15-day disabled list and started Friday. LHP Brian Tallet (left forearm tightness) and 3B Edwin Encarnacion (right shoulder soreness) went on the DL.

Mets: RHP John Maine left Friday's start with two outs in the fourth inning because of pain in his left elbow. The team said he also had a muscle spasm in his nonthrowing elbow.

Nationals: RHP Jason Bergmann, 28, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse. He was 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA in four relief appearances.

Rangers: RHP Scott Feldman was scratched from his starts vs. Detroit because of a stomach virus. Rich Harden moved up a day to take Feldman's spot. Feldman is expected to pitch today. … The Triple-A contract of top 1B prospect Justin Smoak was purchased and the struggling Chris Davis was sent to the minors.

Royals: RHP Juan Cruz, who allowed opponents to hit .391 against him in 51/3 innings this season, was released, and RHP Luis Mendoza was designated for assignment. LHP Bruce Chen and RHP Brad Thompson, two nonroster invitees to spring camp, will fill the bullpen spots.

Twins: INF Nick Punto went on the 15-day DL with a strained right hip flexor. Manager Ron Gardenhire made Punto his starting third baseman just before the season started. But he has played in only three games and is hitting .125. Brendan Harris has been playing in Punto's absence.

Yankees: 3B Alex Rodriguez says he was just tired when he took a shortcut across the pitcher's mound that offended Oakland's Dallas Braden, and that the whole thing was funny. Rodriguez dismissed the jaunt as "no big deal." Braden accused A-Rod of breaking an unwritten rule of baseball etiquette and shouted at A-Rod.
