DETROIT — RHP Joel Hanrahan, who is working his way back from May 2013 Tommy John surgery, agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal with the Tigers on Friday.

Hanrahan, who can make an additional $2.17 million in bonuses, saved 76 games for the Pirates from 2011-12. He appeared in only nine games for the Red Sox in 2013.

Detroit set-up man Bruce Rondon is out for the year with Tommy John surgery. And its bullpen entered Friday with a 5.37 ERA.

Hanrahan, 32, is expected to throw to hitters next week but said he's hesitant to put a timetable on returning.

"My arm feels good. My body feels good," he said. "I'm able to throw a slider. I don't think anybody's really saying like, 'You've got to be back on June 1.' It'll come day by day."
