Region track: Land O'Lakes girls, boys finish high

Land O'Lakes' girls and boys teams notched top-three showings at Wednesday's Class 3A-2 region meet at Lake Minneola.

Hallie Grimes helped the girls to a second-place finish (67 points) behind Orlando Lake Nona (74.5). The senior won the 400 meters in 57.09 seconds and ran a leg for the winning 4x400 — with Christa Haran, Lindsey Weilant and Makenzie Fish — that finished in 4:03.94.

Also qualifying for state for the Gators: senior Victoria Cannata (second, high jump), senior Kassidy Wallace (third, triple jump), senior Kelsey McKee (fourth, shot put) and the 4x800 team (second).

The North Suncoast saw three other girls win events. Mitchell junior Taylor Anderson, also a state champion swimmer, cleared 10 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault. Zephyrhills senior Scarlett Lawhorne heads back to state after her victory in the adaptive shot put (13-1). And Mitchell junior Emily Kerns prevailed in the 1,600 (5:14.19) and was second in the 3,200.

The Mustang girls were fifth overall (48 points).

Also of note for the girls: Springstead senior Wilena Little placed second in the 200 and long jump, and teammate Erin Blackwell was just a step out of first in the 800.

On the boys side, Land O'Lakes had the highest North Suncoast finish — third (55 points) behind champ Kissimmee Liberty (103).

Senior cross country standouts Tyler Stahl (4:28.38, 1,600) and Jake Poore (9:48.82, 3,200) were the lone individual winners for Land O'Lakes. But like their female counterparts, the Gator boys made up points with top-four finishes from senior Stefan Zapata (second, triple jump), the 4x100 (third) and 4x800 (fourth) relays and Stahl (second, 3,200).

Springstead senior Bobby Harris, who won the high jump (6-6), heads back to state to defend his title before attending North Florida in the fall.

Rounding out the North Suncoast's winners was River Ridge senior Devon Jerothe in the pole vault (14-6). Another Jerothe, sophomore Garrett, also is headed to state after placing second in the event.
