Track: Sunshine Athletic Conference meet preview

Sunshine Athletic Conference Track Championships

Where: Anclote High

When: Saturday. Field events, 10 a.m.; preliminaries, noon; running finals, 2 p.m.

Teams: Anclote, Fivay, Gulf, Hudson, Land O'Lakes, Mitchell, Pasco, Ridgewood, River Ridge, Sunlake, Wesley Chapel, Wiregrass Ranch, Zephyrhills

2012-13 girls champion: Wiregrass Ranch

2012-13 boys champion: Land O'Lakes

Skinny: With solid depth and the best 4x800-meter relay time this season, Wiregrass Ranch has a good opportunity to extend its five-year reign as girls champion. The Bulls, however, do not have the stranglehold they've enjoyed in past years. Land O'Lakes, Mitchell, Zephyrhills and last year's runnerup, Pasco, have their sights on dethroning Wiregrass. Pasco's Alfreda Steele, who won the long jump, 100 and 200 as a freshman at the SAC meet last season, is favored to repeat, especially in the long jump, where she has a personal best of 18 feet, 4 inches this year. Mitchell's Emily Kerns also returns after winning the 800 in 2013. Kerns is the leading distance runner in the conference with top times in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. On the boys' side, Land O'Lakes has won back-to-back titles and is the overwhelming favorite to capture a third straight. Depth and a flurry of athletes in each event have Land O'Lakes in great position. It is favored in seven individual events — with five different athletes — as well as two relays. Anclote's Jamaree Reid, who swept the hurdle events last year, is expected to do so again as a senior.

  1. Rowdies settle for draw at home

ST. PETERSBURG — The good news for the Rowdies is that they still haven't lost a game at Al Lang Stadium since late April. The bad news is they had to settle for a 1-1 tie against Ottawa on Saturday night in front of 6,710 sweaty fans.

  2. Bats come to life, but Rays' freefall continues (w/video)

    The Heater

ST. PETERSBURG —The six runs seemed like a ton, just the second time the Rays had scored that many in a game during their numbing two-plus-weeks stretch of offensive impotency, and amazingly, the first time at the Trop in nearly two months.

Lucas Duda connects for a two-run home run in the sixth, getting the Rays within 7-5. A Logan Morrison home run in the ninth made it 7-6, but Tampa Bay couldn’t complete the comeback.
  3. Rays journal: Cesar Puello, who has one major-league game, claimed off waivers

    The Heater

ST. PETERSBURG — Looking to add punch to their right-handed lineup, the Rays claimed OF Cesar Puello off waivers Saturday from the Angels.

  4. Marc Topkin's takeaways from Saturday's Rays-Mariners game

SS Adeiny Hechavarria doesn't always look like he's going hard, but he showed impressive reactions Saturday in reversing field to catch a ball that clanked off the catwalk then firing to second to double up Guillermo Heredia on an attempt to tag up.
