ESPN’s Todd McShay: Quinton Flowers may be suited for developmental league

The veteran NFL draft analyst says the record-setting USF quarterback misses too many "routine throws"

ESPN's Todd McShay, who will cover his 10th NFL draft this weekend, participated in a national media conference call Wednesday, during which we managed to shoehorn a question about USF's Quinton Flowers.

Specifically, we asked McShay if he believes Flowers has a chance to get drafted — either at quarterback or another position — based on what he has observed and studied. Here's his response in its entirety.

He's an interesting one, because he's obviously very talented and had a lot of success. I've studied him and in kind of trying to look at him in both ways, as an athlete and then as a potential quarterback to develop. The trouble with a lot of these quarterbacks that need more time and development, where do you get it? Where do you develop and how do you have the time? So maybe we'll see with some of these developmental leagues that are popping up that there will be more options.

I view him quite honestly as more of a developmental running back, offensive weapon-type. He's 215 pounds, 5-foot-10, ran like a 4.63 (in the 40) at Indianapolis. Not great speed, but obviously he can do some things with the ball in his hands. If he wants to make a run at quarterback, I think it's probably gonna be as an undrafted free agent who may have to bounce around in some different leagues and just get some experience and continue to work on his footwork.

There's too many missed routine throws, I think would be the biggest issue. His height is a concern, as (has been) overcome by some, but you have to be really refined as a passer, and really your timing and ability to move within the pocket and locate passing windows if you're 5-10. You've got to be Russell Wilson, and Russell Wilson is kind of one in a million, really.

It should be noted that while Flowers measured at 5-10 at the NFL scouting combine, he was measured at 5-11 1/2 at USF's on-campus pro day last month, according to he and his agent.
