3A volleyball: Clearwater Central Catholic aces quarterfinal test

Class 3A Marauders ace quarterfinal test

Behind a monster serving night, Clearwater Central Catholic completed a three-game sweep of Lake Placid on the road in its region opener. The Marauders had 17 aces on a night when CCC coach Andrew Wilson was able to empty his bench.

"It was a good night," Wilson said. "We played well, but we're going to have to play better than we did tonight to beat Berkeley Prep."

CCC (12-13) gets its third crack at Berkeley Prep in a region semifinal Tuesday. The Marauders have been swept twice by the Buccaneers, most recently last week in the district championship.

"I'm excited for Berkeley Prep," Wilson said. "I don't think we played against them the way I would have liked in the district final. It'll be interesting to see if we can improve."

Against Lake Placid, Mary Michael Toups led the Marauders with 15 kills, and Vanessa Annoni had a team-high 29 assists.

"Lake Placid was scrappy," Wilson said. "They played good defense and hustled, but they didn't have too much offense."
