6A-7 volleyball: Countryside-Sickles rematch set

TAMPA — In last year's Class 6A, District 7 final, Sickles knocked off Countryside after losing eight straight matches to the Cougars.

This year, Countryside can avenge its stunning loss and knock off the defending district champions with a win in tonight's final.

Sickles (13-11) overpowered Mitchell, 25-21, 14-25, 25-21, 25-17. Mitchell showed signs of life in the second game, but Sickles easily handled the next two.

Lauren Ramsey led the Gryphons with 13 kills. Setter Madi Comperry had a team-high 28 assists.

Gryphons coach Robert Brashear was excited for the rematch.

"I'm already nervous," he said. "They (Countryside) are going to be tough. For us to come out and upset the best team will not be easy.

"Our team scared me throughout the season. We are actually playing better ball later in the season."

Countryside easily handled host Gaither, rolling to victory 25-6, 25-8, 25-9. The Cougars never trailed, and quickly opened up double-digit leads in each game.

"We serve tough and that was the difference," Cougars coach Kaylyn Bayly said. "They couldn't run an offense because of it."

Bayly looked forward to the final.

"Between us, it's always a good match," she said. "It's one of those games where it doesn't matter what the match is, it'll be good. I just want our kids to get out there and play well."
