A-8 volleyball: Bayshore Christian prevails without key player

Class A, district 8 Faith Warriors prevail minus key player

Bayshore Christian's meeting with Bradenton Christian for the A-8 title Thursday night pitted two defending district champs thanks to this year's realignment.

After a tough five-set match in the fourth meeting between these teams, the Faith Warriors won their 14th straight district crown 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 15-13.

The win came without junior outside hitter Gabby Fernandez, who sat out the match after injuring her shoulder in practice Monday.

Sophomore outside hitter Madison Schmitt picked up the slack with 24 kills. Senior Valencia King added 16 kills, Hannah Mirabella had 24 digs and Amber Mirabella tallied 36 assists. .

The status of Fernandez, averaging 4.7 kills a game, for the region quarterfinal Tuesday is uncertain. Coach Melanie Humenansky said she wouldn't know until MRI results are revealed today.

"We're not going to risk her future," she said. "If we have to, our team will play for her."
