A-9 volleyball: Lakeside, Canterbury reach final

LAND O'LAKES — The one-hour trip from Pinellas County is long and boring.

None of the girls from Lakeside Christian or Canterbury seemed to mind having to come back once more after winning semifinal matches Tuesday. Both made the region tournament and met Thursday for the title and homecourt advantage to begin the playoffs.

A young Lakeside team upset host Academy at the Lakes 3-2. Canterbury cruised over Citrus Park 3-0.

"This is (Academy's) home gym," Lakeside coach Becky McCarthy said. "We had already lost twice to them during the regular season. Finally, they believed in themselves and now we're going to regionals and that's all we care about."

The Lions squandered Game 1 25-23 after leading 12-2 at one point. But Lakeside won the next two 25-15 and 25-23, lost Game 4 25-20 then prevailed 15-10 in the fifth.

Lakeside got 20 kills from sophomore Hannah Ray,.

Canterbury won 25-16, 25-11, 25-7 as Megan Burgess had 12 aces and 10 kills.
