Class 5A volleyball: Leto slumps in sweep by Palm Harbor U.

PALM HARBOR — Volleyballs fell like hailstones on Leto's side of the net, crashing to the floor, sending echoes to the roof of the arena.

Whether it was spikes or serves, Palm Harbor University kept pounding the ball Wednesday night. It eventually paid off as the Hurricanes went on blistering late runs in each game to win 25-16, 25-7, 25-10 .

"It was about what we expected," PHU coach Tara Kruk said. "I'm pleased that we won. But we could have played better."

The Falcons (11-6) had strong performances from Debbie Ramirez and Marina Dottie.

"Palm Harbor is a great team, but I thought our girls were real scrappy," Leto coach Mike McManus said. "We came in with a lot of confidence and were able to hang in there at times."

The Hurricanes were coming off a week in which they won the district title by playing their best volleyball of the season.

"It's the highest level of play we've had here since I've been coaching," Kruk said.

Wednesday's match didn't reach that level. But PHU (24-3) bore down at the end of each game to win convincingly.

Cassie Roy had 11 kills, Chelsea King had 11 digs and Cassie Wilkerson had 29 assists to lead the Hurricanes.
