Class A: Lancers make it a season sweep
ST. PETERSBURG — Melissa Olson had nine kills and Ashley Rubright added 16 assists to lead Cambridge to a 25-19, 25-21, 25-13 victory over Canterbury in their Class A region quarterfinal on Wednesday.
It was the Lancers' third victory over Canterbury this season.
"They always play us tough and we knew we couldn't look past them regardless of what happened in the regular season," Cambridge coach Janelle Barnes said.
Canterbury (16-9) had opportunities in the first two games but failed to make plays down the stretch. Trailing 15-11 in Game 1, Canterbury ran off six straight points to take a 17-15 lead before Olson stopped the run with two service aces and a kill to help the Lancers (18-7) take a 19-17 lead that they did not relinquish.
In the second game the Lancers took an 18-14 lead thanks to a 7-0 run but Canterbury rallied to 20-19 behind hitters Megan Burgess and Caitlyn Lincoln. The Crusaders made several unforced errors to drop the set.
"We were able to keep our emotions in check even when we lost a couple of tough rallies," Barnes added. "We've been working on staying focused and finishing strong."
Amber Rubright had five of her seven kills in the final set to lead the Lancers. Burgess led Canterbury with seven kills and Nina Gomez had nine digs.
"They are a fundamentally strong team," Canterbury coach John Milkovich said. "We are still young but we won our district and had a wonderful year."
