Wainwright's elbow okay

ST. PETERSBURG — Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright returned to St. Louis for tests on his ailing right elbow Wednesday, and an MRI exam showed no structural damage.

On Tuesday the right-hander pitched seven innings in a 1-0 win over the Rays at Tropicana Field and afterward had soreness that GM John Mozeliak compared to tennis elbow.

Mozeliak did not say if Wainwright would miss his next start.

Before Wednesday's game against the Rays, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said that everything the team had heard about Wainwright's elbow has been positive.

Wainwright had elbow ligament replacement surgery in February 2011. Matheny said the discomfort was on the other side of the elbow. Wainwright has had discomfort in recent starts, which the team has monitored.
