Wizards will not void Arenas' deal

WASHINGTON — A day after Gilbert Arenas was sentenced to 30 days in a halfway house for bringing guns into the Wizards' locker room, team president Ernie Grunfeld reaffirmed that the three-time All-Star will be back with the club next season.

"We're not going to void his contract. As I've said all along, he's going to be with us," Grunfeld said Saturday before the Wizards' franchise-record 15th consecutive loss. "Gilbert is a part of this organization, he's part of our team, and he will be back with us next year. I think people forget that he's still one of the best players in this league."

Arenas avoided jail time for the offense, instead receiving a sentence that also includes two years of probation, a $5,000 fine and 400 hours of community service.

The Wizards could have attempted to void the last four years of Arenas' six-year, $111 million contract, although the players union vowed to fight such a move.

There is some question whether Grunfeld will be back. Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis is expected to finalize a purchase of the team soon, and Grunfeld was asked if he expects Leonsis to keep him on: "I think I'm pretty good at what I do."

Game highlights: Mehmet Okur had 22 points and the Jazz extended the Wizards' team-record losing streak to 15 games, 103-87. … A night after the Nets beat Detroit to eliminate any chance of setting a record for fewest wins in a season, they lost 106-83 to the Bulls.

Around the league: X-rays on Carlos Delfino's head and neck were negative, and the Bucks forward is day to day with neck and jaw soreness a day after being taken from the court on a stretcher. Delfino was hurt late in the first half of an 87-74 loss to the Heat on Friday. He drove to the basket, stumbled and landed face down in the lane. Udonis Haslem, the 235-pound forward from Florida, went up for the rebound and landed on the back of Delfino's head and neck. … Mavericks guard Caron Butler was fined $25,000 by the league for directing inappropriate language toward fans Thursday during a loss to the Blazers.
