Wrestling: PHU crushes field at Logan Kushner Duals

PALM HARBOR — The Palm Harbor University wrestling team, on a mission to win a state title, demonstrated its focus yet again Saturday, going undefeated at the Logan Kushner Duals.

The Hurricanes went 10-0 and did not surrender more than 18 points (to Fivay) in any dual. Runnerup Durant went 9-1 but mustered only 12 points in a 40-point loss to PHU.

"Top to bottom, they (PHU) are just stacked," Fivay coach Matt Bullwinkel said.

Brothers Jared (126 pounds) and Connor (132) Prince, joined by Anthony Agazarm (138) and Tucker Hardwick (145), posted 10-0 marks. Gunner Hurst and Aaron Hartman, who typically wrestles at 145, switched off wrestling at 152 and 160; Hurst was 10-0 and Hartman 9-1. Hartman's loss came at 160 against third-ranked Andrew Scherer of Fivay via a last-second takedown.

Jake Timpanaro (170) went 9-1, but the most pleasant surprises for PHU were Marco Prusac and Chris Fraggle. Prusac trimmed down after wresting at heavyweight earlier in the season. He was 10-0 Saturday, and Fraggle, a freshman, went 9-1.

"This was his (Prusac's) first time at 195, once he adjusts to that weight he'll be even better," coach Brad Sakevich said.

Countryside and Pinellas Park went 5-4, both opting to not wrestle the final round of duals. The Cougars' lightweights shined. Cain Martin (106) and Alex Kantelis (113) were both 9-0, with Kantelis defeating Fivay's Jose Morales 8-6 in overtime to hand Morales his only defeat at the tournament.

"He (Kantelis) is a second-year wrestler and he's hungry," coach Jason Reynolds said. "He's one of the hardest workers in the room and he's a sponge, he's not afraid."

The Patriots' top wrestler, Chance Leccese, went 8-1, losing only to Fivay's Nicco Lightfoot by a pin in the second period. Leccese was down 5-3 when he shot in for a takedown and Lightfoot ended up on top and eventually got the pin.

"It was definitely a good match for me," Leccese said. "He's on another level, but it was a great match."

Falcon Duals: Host Dunedin went 3-2, tying Bradenton Southeast for third place at the Falcon Duals. Dunedin's Anthony Dampier (170) and Stephen Nichols (106) both went 4-1 at the event. Dampier's only loss came against Kissimmee Osceola's Spencer Lacey, ranked third in the state. Also, 126-pounder Brandon Ditro went 3-2 wrestling up a weight class at 132. Ditro beat Eric Cabral of Sarasota Booker and lost to seventh-ranked Jared Tarvin of Lakeland's Lake Gibson in overtime.
