KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Vernon Wells hit a go-ahead two-run homer off former Ray James Shields, then made a long running catch in the left-centerfield gap that preserved a victory for Andy Pettitte and the Yankees. Pettitte pitched seven stellar innings and improved to 15-3 in his career against the Royals. Shields was hurt by third baseman Mike Moustakas' throwing error in the second that resulted in New York's first run. He also gave up Wells' two-run shot in the fifth.
