TAMPA — A 51-year-old motorcyclist died early Thursday after his motorcycle crashed into the guardrail of Interstate 275 and he was thrown off the overpass, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Verlon John McDonald, of Largo, was riding a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle on southbound I-275 when troopers said for unknown reasons he lost control.

The crash took place at about 2:50 a.m. where I-275 crosses Lois Avenue. The motorcycle struck the guardrail and McDonald was thrown to the roadway below.

McDonald was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, troopers said. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
