At just 26, Kyle Kilgore is a major local fashion designer and business owner of Kilgore Atelier, which for years operated out of his small, home studio in Ybor City.

Creative Loafing helped boost Kilgore’s brand when it recognized him as the Best Designer of the Bay. Now the young entrepreneur has scored his first storefront location located on the ground level of Skypoint, the downtown condo tower at 777 N Ashley Drive.

Kilgore says a part of him was surprised to move into a space owned by the founder of Anise Global Gastrobar, and part of him expected it.

“It was surreal but also not entirely a shock,” he said.

“Being a member of the Tampa community I realized Tampa’s known for taking care of their own. The space was up for grabs and they wanted somebody that could do something fun and creative with the space and bring something different downtown, and that happened to be me.”

The studio features samplings of Kilgore’s two collections which range from edgy European streetwear finds to cool-color palettes to formal attire such as red carpet gowns for women, weddings and suits and tuxedos for men.

In addition, the storefront also provides services such as alterations, repairs and consulting for custom pieces, all of which are handmade to order and showcases a variety of brands from other local designers.

The store also offers customers treats from Bake ‘n’ Babes, the local bakery best known for its bacon-topped or alcohol-infused cupcakes.

According to Kilgore, the decision to collaborate with Julie Curry’s Bake ‘n’ Babes tied back to the original concept of the location which was designed to be “a fashionable shoppable lounge.”

“Once we were given the opportunity to execute that concept, I realized I’m not a chef so the food part was a bit difficult,” Kilgore said.

Bake ‘n’ Babes, which has a location at the Hall on Franklin in Tampa Heights, will offer a number of its signature desserts as grab and go treats, and as time progresses, the owner Julie Curry, hopes to release more location specific items.

Kilgore Atelier is available via appointments or walk-ins seven days a week from 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Kilgore plans a grand opening event in mid to late-November. For more information visit kilgoreofficial.com.
