HILLSBOROUGH
Claire Snyder, Tampa Prep sophomore
Few breakthrough seasons have been this stunning. Snyder, who essentially didn’t train over the summer, won her first meet of the year — the Seffner Christian Invitational — in late September, then really took off. With each ensuing race, she whittled a few more seconds off her time, evolving into a sub-19-minute competitor. Her coronation as an elite area runner occurred in late October at Lutz’s Lake Park, where she conquered a seasoned field to win the Hillsborough County championship on a 3-mile course. Ten days later, she won the Class A, District 8 title. A region runnerup finish followed before Snyder capped her season by placing eighth at the Class A state meet in Dade City.
Max del Monte, Chamberlain senior
The Chiefs’ homeschooled senior essentially sacrificed the season’s earlier meets, where his times were modest, so he’d be in optimal condition when it counted. The calculated gamble worked; del Monte won county and district titles, then placed second at the Class 3A state meet (15:28.38) on a warm morning in Dade City.
PINELLAS
Jacob Hudak, Seminole senior
The Warhawks had a void to fill after the graduation of Chase Sutton, the Times’ 2010 runner of the year. Hudak assumed the leadership role by becoming the team’s No. 1 runner and had his best season, winning every regular-season meet against county competitors and finishing in the top four at district, region and state meets.
Katelyn Greenleaf, Northside Christian senior
She has been Pinellas County’s most dominant runner throughout her high school career, winning every race against a county competitor. This season she took it to another level. She broke her own record at the St. Petersburg City Meet, finishing in 18 minutes, 31 seconds, a 23-second improvement despite battling strong wind gusts. She went on to win conference and district titles and finished in the top 10 at state for the fifth straight season.
