Just about everyone knows someone who has been bullied, in ways big and small. Understandably, though, many victims are reluctant to speak about their experiences. We found some who aren't.
“Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” – Marilyn Monroe
BY ALLIE DAVISON, Wharton High
Abbey Kaczmarek, a senior at Wharton High (pictured below), is a self-proclaimed “tall girl” and varsity basketball player who loves seeing the world from her vantage point. She also loves stilettos. Tb-two* asked her what it’s like to tower over the crowds in a killer pair of high heels.
Exactly how tall are you?
I’m 6 feet tall, but the doctors tell me I may grow to be 6-2 or 6-3.
What’s your favorite pair of heels?
These black strappy heels that my mom just bought me for Christmas. I wore them on Christmas Eve and became obsessed. Not only are they so cute, but they’re really comfortable and they make me taller, which I love.
What is the biggest obstacle to wearing heels?
I’d say there are two huge obstacles to wearing heels when you are my height. The first one is accepting that you will be taller than every single one of your friends. No matter what. Everyone will probably stare at you when you walk into a room. The second one is being taller than most guys you will meet, but it’s really not that bad. There will be guys taller!
What advice do you have for a girl struggling with being tall?
I would say it’s not a bad thing at all! Nobody should ever struggle with being tall; being tall is beautiful. Embrace it, and know that people would kill to look like you. I love being tall, and encourage (other) girls to love it as well.
Can shoes make or break an outfit?
I believe shoes can definitely make or break the outfit. When you’re going out and wearing a dress, you have to wear heels, because they just compliment each other.
Still not ready for tower power?
Being the giant isn’t easy, even without adding another four inches. If you’re tall and aren’t ready to parade around in sky-high heels, here are some options that can still give your outfit the extra “oomph” and leave your self-confidence intact.
