BULLY PULPIT

I’m sure most people have read a book or watched a movie and wanted to rewrite the ending or change the plot. On fan fiction websites, writers do just that by rewriting existing storylines, inventing new characters and even crossing over events from two different stories. (So yes, you might see Harry Potter falling madly in love with Bella Swan). But the fun doesn’t stop at wildly popular series like Harry Potter and Twilight — there’s a thriving online community of writers who remake anime, comics, cartoons and even plays and musicals.

I turned to the most popular fan fiction site, fanfiction.net, to learn more about fan fiction and those who create it.

1 Number of Where’s Waldo fan fictions on fanfiction.net

201,504 Number of Twilight fan fictions on fanfiction.net

Most popular musical to write about: Cats

201,545 Number of posts in one Harry Potter thread about a hypothetical relationship between Draco Malfoy and Ginny Weasley

155,000,000 Number of Google hits for “fan fiction”
