BULLY PULPIT

Just about everyone knows someone who has been bullied, in ways big and small. Understandably, though, many victims are reluctant to speak about their experiences. We found some who aren't.

A spotlight on the Times’ players of the week:

Female Hot Shot
Jocelyn Williams, Land O’Lakes High
Sport: Swimming
Skinny: Racing in memory of her late club coach, Kelley Allen, Williams had one of the best performances of her career in last week’s Class 2A, Region 2 meet, finishing with personal bests in all of her events. The junior rebounded from a runnerup finish at districts to win the 200 individual medley (2:13.19). She also placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.09) to qualify for state. Williams was a part of the Gators’ 400 freestyle relay that set a school record (3:45.97) and qualified for state. Williams’ performance helped Land O’Lakes finish third as a team.

Male Hot Shot
Tyler Degen, Fivay High

Sport: Football
Skinny: The Falcons faced a gritty Ridgewood team in Friday’s must-win game. And Degen helped squash any hopes of an upset early. Degen threw for five first-half touchdowns to lead Fivay to an early lead in a 55-28 win over Ridgewood. He matched a season best in accuracy (12-of-18 passing) and set a career high with 319 yards. He also rushed for 19 yards on two carries. Degen’s performance pushed Fivay into a three-way tie for second place in Class 5A, District 6.
