BULLY PULPIT

Just about everyone knows someone who has been bullied, in ways big and small. Understandably, though, many victims are reluctant to speak about their experiences. We found some who aren't.

A spotlight on the Times’ players of the week

FEMALE Hot Shot
Sandra Akachukwu,
Freedom High
Sport:
Track and field
Skinny: The commence-ment of Akachukwu’s senior year mirrored the conclusion of her junior season. The  Western Kentucky signee was named top female athlete at the Feb. 23 Charles Johnson Invitational, placing in four events and leading Freedom to the team title. Her victories in the high jump and long jump were accompanied by third-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters. They were the same four events in which Akachukwu medaled at last season’s Class 4A state meet.

MALE Hot Shot
Joey Galvis,
Jesuit High
Sport:
Basketball
Skinny: Technically, only perform-ances through Friday are considered for the ensuing week’s Hot Shot honors. But since athletes aren’t eligible to win twice in a row, we’re grandfathering in Galvis’ Saturday effort. The lanky senior with long black curls and a longer wingspan earned MVP honors at the Class 5A tournament, helping lead Jesuit to its first state title in 29 years. In Friday’s five-point semifinal win against Jacksonville Bishop Kenny, Galvis led Jesuit in points (16) and steals (four), and had all three of the Tigers’ blocks. His totals for the tourney: 32 points, eight 3-pointers, seven blocks, seven steals.
