Tonight marks a sad occasion for Sean Murphy, a science teacher at Canterbury School of Florida.
The end of October.
Murphy gets more excited for the month of October, even though it means he's on the road a lot, than he does for Halloween. Since 2002, Murphy has been going to Universal's Halloween Horror Nights almost every weekend. He doesn't just go to see the haunted houses over and over, though. Murphy is a leader for the Horror Night Nightmares online forum and a Facebook group called Horrors on Earth. Both of these discuss HHN and speculation about next year's event.
On Fridays during the event, Murphy's students have a sub for the last 10 minutes of class so he can beat the traffic on Interstate 4 to get to Universal. Murphy works as the administrator for the interactive online group, the Baccanoid Legion for Universal's Legendary Truth. Murphy enlists his students to join the legion so he can score points and be the best legion. Right now his legion is in first place.
Over the years, Murphy has befriended many fanatics, including Halloween Horror Night scareactors. Sometimes students who see Murphy at HHN say hi to him when there is a scareactor present. "I send a signal to make sure the actors know who to scare," Murphy said.
Murphy and all the forum leaders and legion administrators sometimes wear special shirts so they can identify each other. The actors scare the people in the shirts more, Murphy said. "It gives a one-on-one kind of feeling for us."
