The artists behind the yummy cookie centerpiece on this week's cover, Nina Vanell and Alex Ingram, are seniors at Palm Harbor University High, board members of the school's chapter of the National Art Honor Society and are also enrolled in Higher Level Art, so they are familiar with creating things.
But sugar and flour? Not so much.
"It was a lot different from painting or drawing in class because those mediums are more consistent and comfortable for me," Vanell said.
"Doing something 3-D was more of a challenge," agreed Ingram, who favors paints and pencils over icing and dough. "Decorating the cookies was a lot like painting, only messier."
Despite the struggles the girls faced (everything from sticky globs of dough that refused to cooperate, a recipe that required strange unit conversions from grams to cups, and cookies that broke and sagged and swelled up in the oven), after just a few hours of manipulating the challenging new medium, they were able to churn out an adorable edible centerpiece that received praise from their peers. It's even prettier than the model shown with the recipe (click here for the recipe). And the sweetest part of the whole experience?
"In the end you got to eat the cookies," Ingram said. "Which I think (made) all of the trouble and mistakes worth it."
