Don't wait for Black Friday to seek deals for holidays

Traditionally, Black Friday has been referred to as the best bargain shopping day of the year, and that designation has attracted millions of shoppers to stores in the wee hours of the morning.

This year, Black Friday may be too late to start.

Make your Christmas gift list now and start looking for discounts. If you see something on your list discounted by more than 30 percent, grab it early. You're not likely to see a better price (unless that gift happens to be a television, in which case you should wait for Black Friday).

Target, for example, has been offering notable discounts during its "Cyber Monday" sales, and other retailers will want to lure those early shoppers.

"Shoppers should look for steep markdowns on some major appliances, mattresses, air conditioners, gas grills, cookware and patio furniture, umbrellas and those accessories," says Brent Shelton of "After a somewhat slower summer buying season, the pickings should be plentiful. Ditto with lawn and garden closeouts, and should there still be back-to-school leftovers; these lucky finds will be super cheap."

Just don't let your early shopping increase the size of your list.
