SEMINOLE HEIGHTS — The day after Black Friday, 12 small businesses in Seminole Heights hope to offer shoppers who aren't worn out a taste of retail with local flavor.

Coinciding with American Express' Small Business Saturday, in which American Express card users get $10 back when they spend $10 or more at a qualifying small business on Nov. 30, the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association and Business Guild of Seminole Heights will host a "Shop Hop," featuring food, beverages and raffle prizes at each of the participating businesses.

Greg Curtis, treasurer of the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association and owner of Cleanse Apothecary, said that a few years ago, several neighborhood businesses created a winter shopping event called "Holiday in the Heights," which helped raise donations for a cause.

Since then, he said, customers have been asking if the neighborhood businesses would be doing anything together again.

"The neighborhood's been popping with restaurants and shops and small businesses lately, so we just wanted to spread the love," he said. "You can't be afraid to share your customers. Our customers love that, and they love to shop local."

Kendra Bailey, owner of the natural pet market Health Mutt and president of the Business Guild, said Seminole Heights offers a sense of community for small-business owners.

"We have so much support from our neighbors," she said. "It feels like small town in the middle of a city. The people here are my neighbors, my friends. At my store, probably 90 percent of the people who shop here live within 15 miles."

The event, she said, is one that business owners hope will draw attention to the area.

"I think it will help solidify and identify us as a neighborhood with several small-business options," she said. "We're hoping it'll put some of our shops on the map."

Businesses participating in Saturday's Shop Hop are Sherry's YesterDaze, Culture and Thrills Collectibles Gallery, A Modern Line, D & D Antiques and More, Cleanse Apothecary, Health Mutt, Velo Champ, Bali Bay Trading Company, Classic Gentlemen Boutique, Forever Beautiful Salon & Wine Spa, Figure 8 Art Supplies and Phoenix Glass Studio.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., customers can pick up a postcard from any participating business and have it stamped by at least six businesses to enter the raffle.
